There is also a 12% chrome alloy steel that goes by the names AISI D3 cold work steel, 1.2080 steel, and JIS SKD1. D3 cold work steel has a very high wear resistance against abrasive and adhesive wear, medium toughness, dimensional stability, and high compressive strength, but it cannot be secondarily hardened due to the huge volume of hard carbides in the steel matrix. Type AISI D3 cold works tool steel is oil-quenched, while some portions may be gas-quenched following vacuum austenitization. Because of this, type D3 cold work tool steel has the propensity to become brittle throughout the hardening process. Type D2 tool steel is the most widely used group D steel. The D3 cold work steels include 1.5 to 2.35% carbon and 12% chromium.
1.2080 steel is a high carbon, high chromium alloy tool steel with remarkable resistance to abrasion and wear. Dimensional stability, excellent tempering resistance, and good thorough hardening characteristics are all present in the 1.2080 X 210Cr12 alloy.
1.2080 steel is a high carbon/chromium tool steel with very high wear resistance. With a tiny size change, it gets tougher. The alloy has a very high compressive strength and undergoes deep hardening.
Steel 1.2080 Applications
Intricate blanking and forming tools for large batches of hard and abrasive materials are suitable applications for 1.2080 steel. Other typical uses include liners for brick and tile molds, sleeves for corrosive powders, master hobs for cold-hobbing plastic molds, and tableting punches.

– It is annealed before ex-factory, which ensures good metallographic structure, proper hardness and good workability. There is no need to anneal again.
– But It must be re-annealed if reforged, as the original organization and performance are destroyed after reforged, and the forging stress increased.
– Normally it will be annealed twice and the temperature of the second annealed is 20°C lower than the first one.
The features
high carbon and high chromium ledeburite steel.
High wear resistance, hardenability, strong toughness, thermal stability, the compressive strength.
Has high wear resistance, is 3~4 times higher than average low alloy tool steel, quenching deformation small cabinet.
Applications
It Highly stressed cutting and punching tools for thin sheets, profile rolls, drawing and deep drawing tools, stone processing tools, knives for paper and plastics, and shear knives for thin sheets.
